Cinema in China

Chinese cinema has rapidly embraced technology—not just on screen, but across the entire moviegoing ecosystem. Nowhere is this more visible than in the adoption of self-service systems, which have become standard in urban theaters and are increasingly expected by consumers.

At the front end, self-service ticketing kiosks are ubiquitous in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. These kiosks allow customers to browse showtimes, select seats, and complete payment within seconds, typically using QR-based mobile wallets like Alipay or WeChat Pay. The integration between mobile apps and physical kiosks is especially advanced: users often reserve tickets on their phones and simply scan a code at the kiosk to print or validate entry. This hybrid model reduces queues and aligns with China’s broader cashless economy.

Beyond ticketing, concession automation is also gaining traction. Self-service food ordering kiosks enable patrons to customize snacks and beverages, mirroring trends seen in quick-service restaurants. In high-traffic cinemas, automated pickup lockers—similar to smart parcel lockers—are being tested, allowing customers to retrieve pre-ordered items without staff interaction. This is particularly effective during peak hours, where throughput and speed are critical.

Operationally, Chinese cinema chains leverage centralized management platforms to monitor kiosk fleets, track usage patterns, and optimize staffing. AI-driven analytics help predict demand, adjust pricing dynamically, and even recommend films based on user behavior. Facial recognition and membership systems are also being piloted, enabling personalized experiences and faster check-ins, though these raise regulatory and privacy considerations.

Strategically, the use of self-service in Chinese cinemas reflects a broader philosophy: maximize efficiency, minimize labor dependency, and enhance user convenience. With high population density and digitally native consumers, China has effectively turned cinemas into testbeds for scalable self-service innovation—offering a glimpse into the future of entertainment venues worldwide.

China’s Smart Cinemas: Ticketing Terminals and AI Advertising

The Smart Cinema in China industry is undergoing a rapid transformation—from traditional exhibition spaces into fully digitized, self-service, AI-driven environments. On the computer side note the shift toward Intel Core Ultra (NPU-equipped) mini-PCs inside these kiosks to handle real-time demographic recognition and gaze analysis without high latency or massive cloud egress costs.
